Chapter Eight

Chal growled in frustration. He hadn’t

been able to go and see Palmer for that last

couple of days because Coldston’s men had

been following him around Catalai non-stop,

and it was starting to get on his nerves. Oh, he

understood why Coldston was keeping tabs on

him, but it was still annoying.

“Mr Farnsmith.”

He glanced up from the table where he

sat in a small coffee house. A very tall, muscle-

bound man stood next to him, glowering.

“Yes?”

“You need to come with me.”

“Really? Who said?” Chal was pretty

sure Coldston had got tired of waiting, and

had sent the brawn to bring him in.

“Mr Coldston would like to talk to you.”

The man reached out to grab Chal’s arm,

but Chal shoved his chair back and stood.

While he still had to look up several more

inches to meet the man’s gaze, he didn’t yield.

“I’m not going anywhere with you. If

Coldston wants to talk to me, I’ll be at the

restaurant where our first meeting took place.

I’ll be there around eleven tomorrow

morning.” Chal shook his head. “I might be

many things, but I’m not stupid. I go with you

now, and no one ever hears from me again. I

know the kind of man your employer is.”

“That might be true, but I don’t have time

to argue with you. You didn’t do the job he

hired you for, so he wants to talk to you.” The

man reached for Chal’s arm again, and Chal

stepped away.

He laughed. “You really believe I’ll just

calmly go with you?”

“I don’t care whether it’s calmly or not.

You are coming with me.”

“What’s going on here?”

Chal turned to see Steril walking towards

them. There was something different about the

Thief, and Chal straightened up. Steril didn’t

even look at him, just kept those golden eyes

on Chal’s possible captor.

“I don’t see where it’s any of your

business, Thief.” The enforcer started to move

in front of Chal, his hands already out to grab

Steril. “You should know better than to

interfere with something that has nothing to do

with you.”

Before the enforcer could touch Steril,

two other men pushed by and surrounded

him. The Beasor didn’t get a chance to say

anything as they dragged him out of the coffee

house. Chal stood in shock for a moment,

trying to figure out what had happened. He

turned to glance at Steril.

“Who were they? Why are you here?”

Smiling, Steril gestured towards Chal’s

table. “Sit. You’re lucky I happened to be

thirsty, or else he probably would’ve

kidnapped you. We’d never have heard from

you again.”

Chal frowned and sat. “I could’ve gotten

away from him. All I would have had to do

was flash to a different universe. He’s just a

regular Beasor, and wouldn’t have been able to

follow me.”

“I’m pretty sure he had silk ropes, and

was going to bind you with them before you

could have flashed.”

One of the waitresses dropped off Steril’s

coffee and he thanked her. He sipped it while

Chal still stared at him.

“Who were those men with you?”

“My bodyguards-slash-escorts, I guess.

My father got tired of me running away from

the Facility, so he gave me an ultimatum. The

only way I’m able to come and go as I please is

if I take those guys with me. If I don’t, or if I

slip
